The website chosen for this exercise is:
http://capecodwedding.com/
Also known as Richard Talmage Images
Preliminary Information about the Website:
Looking through the website, it appears that its main goal is to provide information and informational resources to people interested in obtaining photography services.
Photography services are provided for the following areas:
* Weddings
* Commercial (images used for business purposes)
* Family (gatherings and reunions)
Even though the website provides photography services in those areas, its main focus appears to be on providing wedding photography.
A person can take a look at the homepage, the videos provided on the website, and the resource page to see that this website is focused on wedding photography.
Also, the hyperlink itself (http://capecodwedding.com/) says that the website deals with weddings.
It’s safe to say that the website is not an e-commerce site since there is no shopping cart or any links to provide the company/website with any monetary transactions.
There are a total of 2 pages that lists the fees for the photography services, though there is no information on what forms of payment are accepted and how to provide that payment.
It is assumed that any payments to be made to the company (Richard Talmage) are made in person (whether by check, credit, or cash). It’s possible that the company accepts electronic forms of payment (credit cards over the phone, or even PayPal) though there is nothing on the website to suggest that this occurs.
There is contact form sheet where the user can input their contact information and any requests that the user has to pass along to the company (Richard Talmage). This contact form has the user specify their interest in wedding, commercial, or family photography services.
Improvements to the Website:
A. How to Better Focus the Photography Services
It’s possible to have 2 (or more) different websites, each one focused on a specific area of photography such as wedding photography, commercial photography, and family (gatherings and reunions) photography.
Being that family gathering and reunions are somewhat similar in nature to weddings, its reasonable to have a website dedicated to wedding photography and have family related photography placed in a smaller (less noticeable) area of the website, unless family related photography is a significant part of this company’s business (revenue).
Keep in mind when doing any type of SEO (search engine optimization) or activity involving keywords, that the website will probably “register” (come up on Google, Yahoo, etc.) as a website dealing with weddings and wedding photography and not so much as a website dealing with commercial or family photography.
By having a website totally dedicated to wedding photography services, the user is clear on the services being provided, and it might positively impact search results on search engines pointing users interested in wedding photography to this website.
This ultimately depends on whether or not the company (Richard Talmage) is willing to have 2 websites, each focused on a specific area.
Also it depends on how well the present website is doing in terms of its function, namely it appears to be a resource providing information on Richard Talmage’s photography services and selling him as a photographer.
If there’s room for improvement, and it makes sense from a monetary point of view, then consider going ahead with creating a site focused on only wedding photography services.
B. Create a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
The website can have a FAQ included at the top link bar of every webpage (and at the links at the bottom of page) and include the following information in the FAQ:
* Forms of payment accepted for the photography services
* How to “deliver” payment (physically, electronically, etc.)
* Contact information (including a phone number, address, and email)
* How to prepare for the wedding photography services (or other photography services i.e. commercial or family)
* Any information that a user interested in photography services would be interested in knowing
C. Create “Breadcrumbs” At The Top of a Webpage:
Presently the website doesn’t have any breadcrumbs to show the user where they are exactly on the website and how to go back to a specific section if they want to.
Breadcrumbs can also be useful to distinguish the wedding photography services from the other photography services provided. The user can look at the top of the webpage to see what section he/she is under.
D. Measurements or Metrics:
It would be somewhat of a challenge to perform a metric such as click-through rates being that there is nothing to actually “buy” (“click” and buy something) on the website, so this cannot be measured.
What could be measured is how many people call up or request information as a result of going to the website.
Also, the company could measure how many people buy the photography services as result of going to the website.
The website, from a direct marketing point of view, could serve as a “two-step”, where going the website is the first step in the process and the second step is calling up the company or filling out and sending in the inquiry form, and ultimately buying the services.
Hits to the website can also be measured, though hits alone don’t provide a lot of information on whether or not those hits brought in business (whether those hits turned into sales).
It’s also important to measure how well certain keywords used in the website have done towards attracting the target market(s) to the website. This aspect has to do with the copy on the website and what topics the copy focuses on (in this case, most of the copy has to do with wedding photography).
This is important when doing SEO (search engine optimization) and your objective is to have the targeted users to come to your website rather than a competitor’s website (or another website other than your own).
In a Nutshell:
* Create the website(s) in a way that will better target the services provided and make it clear to users as to what is being offered.
* Create “breadcrumbs” at the top of a webpage to help guide users better around the website.
* Create a FAQ to provide users with information, important and relevant to their needs.
* Use relevant metrics or measuring systems to determine how well the website is performing in regards to the website strategy’s objectives.

C. Strategy
Here is a summary strategy based on the above keyword searches:
* The Yahoo Search Marketing tool was more focused than the Overture Keyword Selector Tool in providing keywords closer to and more targeted towards the original terms I placed in the search boxes
Title pages:
* The top left hand title of the homepage needs to contain the following words (or a combination of the following words) to increase the chances of the user finding my project’s website:
The other webpages on my project’s website also need to contain these words (or a combination of them) :
Cape Cod
Photo
Photography
Video
Videography
Wedding photo
Wedding video
Negative Keywords:
* The words and phrases marked in a red font in the above search results can be used as negative keywords
* The flowing words can also be used as negative keywords:
Adult photos
Adult videos
Nude
Nude photos
Nude wedding
Nudity
Porn
Pornography
Sex
Sex bride
Sex photos
Sexy
Sexy wedding
Sex videos
Any combination of the above words having to do with sex and adult themes, especially when used with the following words or phrases, can be used as negative keywords:
Brides
Bridal
Wedding
Wedding photos/videos
Wedding photography/videography
The purpose here is not to limit words having to do with weddings or wedding photography or videography, rather only when combined with words or phrases having to do with pornography or adult themes, so my website can attract the right prospects actually searching for wedding photo/video services
* There might be a way to “negate” any searches for States (states in the US) that are not related to Massachusetts without having to input all of the rest of the States as negative keywords
* Also, there might be a way to “negate” searches for celebrity weddings or celebrity wedding photos/videos without having to input a vast amount of celebrities (almost infinite amount of celebrities out there) as negative keywords
The purpose of using negative keywords is to better select and attract the most qualified prospects that will come to my website and use my photo/video services

Using Volunteers to Test Site Usability and Design
Testing Site Usability and Design - Introduction
For this assignment, I asked 2 volunteers to accomplish the following 3 tasks on a website:
1. Check out the photos and videos (if available) on the website to get a demonstration of the quality of the photographers’ work
2. Find out what the pricing is for the photography and videography
3. Find out how to contact the company for more information
The volunteers are Anthony Stulich (AS) and Maryann Stulich (MS)
I used 2 websites with Anthony Stulich (AS):
* http://www.capecodphotovideo.com/
And
* http://capecodwedding.com/ (Richard Talmage Images)
I used 1 website with Maryann Stulich (MS):
* http://capecodwedding.com/ (Richard Talmage Images)
The assumption was to go to the website and act as if you are having or hosting a wedding and want to find a wedding photographer/videographer for the wedding.
Both of the volunteers started on the homepage of the website being tested
Volunteer Background Information:
Anthony Stulich (AS): Beginner/basic knowledge of the Internet; knows how to send and receive email; knows how to download files; most likely has not purchased on the Internet in the past
Maryann Stulich (MS): Beginner/basic knowledge of the Internet; uses AOL Instant Messenger; knows how to send and receive email; knows how to download files; probably has purchased on the Internet in the past
Testing Websites’ Usability and Design – Volunteer: Anthony Stulich (AS):
First Website: http://www.capecodphotovideo.com/
* Task 1: Check out the photos and videos (if available) on the website
AS started on the homepage (not the “first” page; I set it up so the homepage was looked at first rather than the “first” page which basically has only one link which says “enter” and takes you to the homepage)
AS then looked at the links at the bottom of the homepage (actually the bottom of the screen) and clicked on the “wedding photography” link
On the “wedding photography” page, AS briefly looked at the 4 listed photographers and then selected Helen Coombs by clicking on the link to her photo gallery
AS briefly looked at Helen’s photo gallery and then clicked on “testimonials” to read more about what others had to say about the photography service
* Task 2: Find out what the pricing is for the photography and videography
AS then clicked on the “contact us” link which took him to the bottom of the homepage, and he briefly looked at that section before clicking on the “helpful links” link
AS briefly looked at “helpful links” page which provided referral services to other companies
AS clicked on “contact us” link again, looked at the page, and clicked on the “Inquiry Form” link
AS briefly looked at the “Inquiry Form” page, and concluded that in order to receive pricing information, a person has to fill out the inquiry form and request pricing information
* Task 3: Find out how to contact the company for more information
This task was accomplished in the last part of task 2 when AS clicked on the “Inquiry Form”
Second Website: http://capecodwedding.com (Richard Talmage Images)
* Task 1: Check out the photos and videos (if available) on the website
AS started on the homepage and looked at the slideshow of wedding photos that appears on the homepage
AS then clicked on the “cape cod wedding photography & videography” link at the bottom left of the homepage and looked at another slide show of photos
AS comments that the wedding photos are “good work” and “impressive”
* Task 2: Find out what the pricing is for the photography and videography
AS looked at the links on the links bar near the top of the page and clicks “home” to go back to the homepage
AS looks at the homepage attempting to find a link that will provide pricing information though does not find it
AS then clicks on the “For Photography Gallery Click Here” link which takes him to the same page he was on before, the “Wedding Photography” page
AS clicks on the “Chatham Beach and Tennis Club” link and looks at the photo slideshow
AS then clicks on the “contact” button on the links bar near the top of the page, looks at the inquiry form and concludes that a person has to fill out the inquiry form and request pricing information in order to receive it
My comments:
The pricing or fee information can be found by either of 2 ways:
1. By holding the mouse pointer over the “weddings” button on the links bar near the top of the page, which will reveal a drop down menu, and then clicking on either the “photo packages/fees” button or the “video packages/fees” button; either of these links will take you to a page with pricing information
2. By clicking on the “fees” link at the bottom right section of a webpage; this link will take you to a page different from the “photo packages/fees” or the “video packages/fees” pages
AS missed number 1 because he was unaware of the drop down menu
AS also missed number 2 because the “fees” link was hard to see, hidden near the bottom right of the webpage
Lesson to web designers: ensure that the links and buttons are easy for users to read and see, and make it easy for users to find information on the website
What’s “easy to read and see” for a designer might not be so for the actual users of the website
To learn more see page 75 (last 2 paragraphs) of the book Don’t Make Me Think by Steven Krug
* Task 3: Find out how to contact the company for more information
This task was accomplished in the last part of task 2 when AS clicked on the “contact” button
Testing Website Usability and Design – Volunteer: Maryann Stulich (MS):
Website: http://capecodwedding.com (Richard Talmage Images)
* Task 1: Check out the photos and videos (if available) on the website
MS started on the homepage and looked at the slideshow of wedding photos that appears on the homepage
MS clicked on the “For Photography Gallery Click Here” link and looked at another slide show of photos
MS then clicked on each of the 4 links to watch the slideshows from each of those weddings:
“Chatham Beach and Tennis Club”
“Popponesset Inn Resort”
“Wequassett Resort and Golf Club”
“Chatham on the Beach”
My comments: MS was more attracted to the photo slideshows than AS and made more comments than AS on how “nice” and “pretty” the photos/weddings were
* Task 2: Find out what the pricing is for the photography and videography
MS clicks on the “specials” button on the links bar near the top of the page and then clicks on the “fees” link at the bottom right section of the webpage
MS looked at and read the material on the page for about a minute and then clicked on the “family” button on the links bar near the top of the page, and looked at the slideshow which appeared
MS then held her mouse pointer over the “weddings” button on the links bar near the top of the page, looked at the drop down menu and clicked on the “video packages/fees” button
MS read the material on the “video packages/fees” page
* Task 3: Find out how to contact the company for more information
MS clicked on the “contact” button on the links bar near the top of the page to find out more info on how to contact the company; MS mentioned that she saw the “contact” button at the top of the page and also the “contact” link near the bottom middle of the page
MS then clicked on the “video” button on the links bar near the top of the page and briefly watched a clip of a wedding video
- The End -

Know of any other full-time weddings-only photographersin Indianapolis, Cincinnati or Dayton, Ohio area?
I am not aware of another full-time exclusively-weddings photographer in Indiana, Ohio or Kentucky.
You're going to have to trust the capturing of your wedding memories to someone, so why not trust your important wedding day memories to a full time professional wedding photographer who ONLY photographs weddings for a living? Makes sense, doesn't it?
A full-time weddings-only photographer will reward you by shooting circles around the others out there, because wedding photography is his true love -- or he wouldn't be doing exclusively-weddings to earn his living and, since he is a low volume specialist, he can give you superior service...and in my case, amaze you by filling your wedding photo orders in just a couple of days. Who else wants to look your absolute best in your wedding photos?
I fully retouch all album prints, getting rid of glare on glasses, shine on foreheads, cheeks, chins and blemishes.
I may even remove bags under someone's eyes when I think it will help. Parents really like that they look ten years younger, yet it's subtle enough no one knows just why everyone looks so good in their wedding photos. But, boy! They sure do! See retouching examples!

I believe that some brides really short change themselves by only considering "local" wedding photographers for their wedding. You might want to consider the following thoughts before excluding non-locals. (Let me plead my case:)
You probably exclude any possibility of hiring any of the best wedding photographers in the world when you insist on hiring "local"...because the odds of the local guys being among the world's best are pretty slim, right? [more]

Yes, you can lock down your wedding date on my schedule without first selecting which package you want...it might keep your date from being booked by someone else!
All I need is a $600 retainer that applies towards your package purchase, then just let me know, within a couple of weeks of booking your wedding date, which package you want.
The retainer is non-refundable, as it takes that wedding date "off the market" and this makes it nearly impossible for me to book another wedding for that date later on should your wedding plans fall thru.

Services Provided:
* Photography services (taking photos of customers)
* Videography services (taking videos of customers)
* Customers can view their photos and videos online and share (link) them with others
* Bridal resources for customers
Opportunities for Online Sales:
* Customers can use the Internet to set up (pre-pay) photo/video services to be provided in the future
* Customers can use the Internet to provide referrals to their friends and associates
* The Internet can also be used for direct response marketing to customers (database marketing, marketing and nurturing past customers, and marketing to new prospects)
* The company can create strategic alliances/joint ventures with other non-competing businesses that serve the same target market
* Rather than directly “competing” with other photographers in the Cape Cod area, it’s possible to create some alliances with other photographers (i.e. list marketing; “trading” prospects i.e. if one business cannot sell a customer perhaps they can sell that lead to another business)

Buying the Book
Preamble
After going to Blogger.com I was told to log in using my Google account. Since I don’t have an account I had to create one. No problem, other than that there was no direct link that said “don’t have a Google account click here.” So I had to find my way around to create an account.
I eventually found the “Create an Account-Blogger” page, though under the “Required information” section it asks you to put in “your current email address” in order to create a Google account.
What email address?
A Google email address? Another email service’s address? What if this is the user’s first time creating an email address? Does this imply that the user has to create an account with another service in order to create a Google account?
This is not very clear and will definitely be unclear to someone starting out with the Internet.
So I went to Google.com and the Gmail section in order to create a Gmail account and here’s what it said:
“To sign up, enter your mobile phone number below. We'll send you a text message with an invitation code to create your account.”
What? What if I don’t have a mobile phone for whatever reason?
It doesn’t matter, because when you click on the link that says: “Can I sign up without the invitation code? Or without a mobile phone?”
You get this answer:
“Currently, we are only sending these codes as text messages to mobile phones. So you will need to have a mobile phone with text message capabilities (most phones have this) and the invitation code itself”
Why should anyone have to have a mobile phone in order to gain an email address?
Answer: “One of the reasons we are offering this new way to sign up for Gmail is to help protect our users and combat abuse.”
Please. This is an easy way to lose potential customers and prevent new customers from creating Gmail account.
So if I don’t have a mobile phone, I lose (no account for me)?
Here’s another reason to lose customers:
Question: “Will it cost me money to receive the text message?”
Answer: “Your mobile service provider may charge you for the text messages you receive. See your mobile service plan for details.”
That doesn’t sound very encouraging.
What if I have a mobile phone and don’t want to give out my number, and there is no reason why anyone should have to, especially in order to create an email address.
I hope that if I do give out my number I will not receive any emails, text, or any messages whatsoever on my mobile phone from Google or anyone related to this transaction.
According to Google:
Question: “What will Google do with my mobile phone number?”
Answer: “We'll use your phone number to send an invitation code in a text message to your phone. In doing so, we store each phone number to make sure it is used to create no more than 10 accounts.”
“In accordance with the Gmail Privacy Policy, your number will never be sold or shared for marketing purposes without your permission, nor will we contact you using this number without your express permission.”
I hope so.
Sometimes you have to take risks in life.
Creating an email account does not need to be this frustrating.
Now onto the book search…
Google It
Typed in “Don’t Make Me Think” in the search box.
The author’s website http://www.sensible.com/ came up first in the results and his website let’s you buy the book from Amazon.com. Not yet.
The other search results were for Amazon related pages and other pages providing info on the book.
Another result that came up (9th listing from the top) is http://www.sherpastore.com, part of Marketing Sherpa, another marketing website, though the price is close to retail.
Go to Yahoo.com
Typed in “Don’t Make Me Think” in the search box.
Amazon.com came up first and often in the results.
The author’s website http://www.sensible.com/ also came up 2nd and 3rd in the results.
Spotcost.com also comes up as one of the results (8th listing from the top). This site claims to provide price comparisons of the book so it gets clicked.
Spotcost.com lists different vendors to buy the book from including Wal-Mart, Amazon Marketplace, Amazon.com, A1 Books, Abebooks, Alibris, Barnes & Noble, and Powells.
Most of these are familiar since I probably did business with them in the past through the Amazon marketplace.
Choosing a vendor
I chose to use Walmart.com since they are probably a trustworthy site and the price was acceptable as well.
Clicking on the Walmart.com link takes you to a page where you can read more about and buy the book. You get standard information about the book, what it’s about, what the price is and how much the shipping is.
What’s good about the Walmart.com page?
* Black type on a white background + White space on the borders = Easy to read.
* The page is simple and to the point.
* The links to the bottom of the page are convenient enabling you to quickly look at Gifting Options, Payment Options, and Shipping & Delivery.
The link to "About the book" is unnecessary. The information being linked to is already displayed on the page.
* The page has a wish list and registry enabling me to save this book for later purchases.
What could be improved about the page?
* There are no reviews (unlike Amazon.com). How can someone tell whether this book is worthwhile or not?
* The reader can zoom in on the cover but not look inside the book. The cover is nice, but remember not to judge a book by it cover so let consumers see the content.
* The page displays info about the book. What about info about the author and what the publisher has to say?
* Also, a significant part of the bottom half of the webpage specifies the payment options and shipping info.
Will the viewer have to read that info each time they look up a book? Put that info somewhere else.
That same space could have been used to talk more about the book or eliminated.
When selling something, focus on the information that will persuade the consumer to make a sale.
Perhaps the page can have separate links to payment options or shipping info. If I’m going to make repeated purchases from this website I’m not interested in seeing the credit card payment options and shipping info each time.
* There are no upsells or “buy this book with this other suggested book” such as Amazon.com offers.
* Is the book new, used, what condition is it in? Amazon.com specifies whether the books are new or used (Amazon Marketplace). Is one to assume that the book is new on the Wal-mart website?
* It would be nice to see how much I’m saving before I click on the “add to cart button” such as Amazon.com which displays the list price and the savings price including the percentage saved. Wal-mart displays this after you click on the “add to cart button.”
The only reason I clicked on the “add to cart button” was because I already saw the other prices on Spotcost.com including Amazon’s price and Wal-mart’s was cheaper and reasonable compared to the others.
Had I simply went to Walmart.com I would have to click on the “add to cart button” to view the discounted price, if any, and perhaps even go over to Amzaon.com to see how the price compares. If I didn’t like the price on Walmart.com I would either have to go back a page or update the item quantity to 0 instead of 1. I don’t need to do this each time I look up a book.
Make it easy to do business with your website.
Simply listing the list price and the discounted price like Amazon does will suffice.
Buying the book
Clicked on the “add to cart button” and needed to update the quantity from 2 to 1, from having to click the “add to cart button” to see what it does and how much I’m saving.
Checking out
Clicked on the checkout button and went to the section “New Online Customers” and clicked continue since “this is your first purchase from Walmart.com”
Signing up
The page asks standard information about the viewer (name, address, etc.)
Hopefully they won’t use the email to send advertisements and if they do, opt out
It asks about whether or not I want “Newsletter Subscriptions”. Nope, just want to order the book.
The Newsletter Subscriptions options is okay as a marketing promotion since it let’s Wal-mart keep in touch with its customers.
Those newsletters better be relevant and interesting to the customers who subscribe or else the newsletters will come across as a nuisance and interruption rather than something beneficial. People are already bombarded with newsletters and emails, many of which tend to be unnecessary (like many advertisements out there).
Wal-mart can change the line “Please uncheck this box if you don't want to receive our newsletter” to ““Please check this box if you want to receive our newsletter.”
Let the customer know that they chose the newsletter rather than you (Wal-Mart) choosing for the customer.
Processing the Order
Standard questions asked (name, address, phone, etc.)
Payments
Subtotal: ….
Shipping: ….
Tax: $1.69
Order Total: ….
Tax? What’s with the tax? Amazon doesn’t charge tax on books. Perhaps I should go over there (can’t for this exercise)…
Wal-Mart gives 3 payment choices
* Pay With a Wal-Mart Gift Card
- How many cards does a person need?
+ Good for database marketing on Wal-Mart’s part
- Bad for undisciplined consumers with multiple cards
* Pay With Bill Me Later
- (Bad for consumers who are “late payment challenged”)
* Pay With a Credit Card or Debit Card
Go with this one
(2 card choices in the drop down menu are Wal-Mart Credit Card and Wal-Mart Discover)
Filled out the credit card info
Confirmation
Everything looks okay.
The line “your order is not complete until you click here” and its “place your order” button appear twice. Once near the top of the page and again near the bottom.
While this may enhance the aesthetics of the page, this is unnecessary and confusing to the user.
Do I click on the top button or the bottom button?
I have to look at the hyperlink in order to discover that the buttons lead to the same destination.
How many people, especially those new to computers and the Internet know how to do that or even what a hyperlink is?
Make it easy and clear for the consumer. Having 1 line and “place your order” button is sufficient.
Conclusions
Wal-Mart gives me a confirmation number and says it will send a confirmation email.
Similar to what Amazon does.
Let’s see how this all turns out.
So far the buying experience was acceptable and I was familiar with the process.
Wal-Mart.com has not given me any strong reason to switch from Amazon.com to Wal-Mart.com
After going to Blogger.com I was told to log in using my Google account. Since I don’t have an account I had to create one. No problem, other than that there was no direct link that said “don’t have a Google account click here.” So I had to find my way around to create an account.
